Brief History of George Mason University

George Mason University (GMU) started in 1957 as part of the University of Virginia. The idea for GMU began in 1949 with the Northern Virginia Center, led by John Norville Gibson Finley.

The campus began with just one building and 17 students. In 1958, the Town of Fairfax gave 150 acres for a permanent campus. By 1964, the first four buildings were finished. GMU became a place where students could get four-year degrees in 1966 and became its independent university in 1972.

What began as a small extension to the University of Virginia and with a few graduate programs with less than 20 students has evolved into George Mason University. It now attracts an enrollment of over 40,000 students. In 1979, the state granted GMU the authority to award doctoral degrees, following which it opened the George Mason University School of Law. In 2022, GMU celebrated its 50th anniversary as an independent university.
