Brief History of George Mason University

George Mason University (GMU) started in 1957 as part of the University of Virginia. The idea for GMU began in 1949 with the Northern Virginia Center, led by John Norville Gibson Finley.

The campus began with just one building and 17 students. In 1958, the Town of Fairfax gave 150 acres for a permanent campus. By 1964, the first four buildings were finished. GMU became a place where students could get four-year degrees in 1966 and became its independent university in 1972.

What began as a small extension to the University of Virginia and with a few graduate programs with less than 20 students has evolved into George Mason University. It now attracts an enrollment of over 40,000 students. In 1979, the state granted GMU the authority to award doctoral degrees, following which it opened the George Mason University School of Law. In 2022, GMU celebrated its 50th anniversary as an independent university.

George Mason University is a culturally diverse place that binds many different cultures together. Indian festivals are celebrated with fanfare and festivity. These celebrations help the Indian students feel part of the community, even when far away from home.

At GMU, you can participate in colorful Holi and the bright lights of Diwali. All these events make the campus full of energy and vibrancy. The Indian Graduate Student Association and the Indian Student Association organize all these festivals, ensuring that traditions from India are celebrated and enjoyed.

The Joy of Holi: Colors and Camaraderie

Holi, the festival of colors, is one of the most exciting events at GMU. This is when students come out to join in the fun of color, music, and dance.

The Indian Student Association organizes a week of “Holi Moli” on the campus during which the campus is colored up with vibrant colors. It is a great way to get the students closer if they are of different cultural backgrounds. There are traditional music and dance displays and lots of Indian snacks for everyone to enjoy.

Diwali: Festival of Lights and Togetherness

Diwali, the festival of light, is celebrated with much pomp and gaiety at GMU. The campus is decorated with diyas, candles, and festive decorations, giving it a new charming look. Traditional performances, cultural shows, and a variety of mouthwatering Indian foods are also included.

The Indian Graduate Student Association organizes a Diwali night with a grand event consisting of a classical and modern dance program, music, and fireworks. This event brings all the Indian students together and attracts other students of various cultures, bringing inclusiveness and cultural exchange.

Navratri and Garba Nights

Navratri—the nine-night festival—will find its way to GMU through the colorful and energetic nights of Garba/Dandiya. Students put on their ethnic attire and come to dance with all energy to the beats of folk music. These nights of music, dance, and the rhythm of ethnic instruments are filled up fully.

IGSA, the Indian Graduate Student Association, in collaboration with the Indian Student Association, or ISA, ensures that the students get a feel for the real essence of Indian culture. They provide opportunities to participate in traditional dance forms and enjoy the festive spirit with friends

Celebrating Independence Day

GMU celebrates Indian Independence Day with patriotism. The Indian Student Association organizes flag-hoisting ceremonies, followed by cultural programs that demonstrate the richness of India’s heritage through speeches, songs, and dance.

The event is one such platform that helps remind students of their roots by celebrating India’s journey as a nation. It gives students an opportunity to express their talents and share their culture with the university community at large.

Cultural Workshops and Food Festivals

Beyond the major festivals, GMU hosts cultural workshops and food festivals that let students explore Indian traditions and cuisine. The Indian Graduate Student Association (IGSA) organizes activities like cooking classes, Rangoli-making workshops, and sari draping sessions.

Food festivals feature Indian street food, regional delicacies, and traditional sweets, offering a culinary journey through India. These events allow students to enjoy their favorite dishes and introduce their peers to Indian gastronomy.
