Navigating College Life: Tips and Tricks for UCM Freshmen

Pursuing education in a foreign country is an exciting adventure filled with different challenges and opportunities. These opportunities enable one to grow both personally and academically. As a freshman at the University of Central Missouri (UCM), you are starting one of the most life-changing parts of your life. To help you with that, we have mentioned some tips below to help you have fun while studying in college.

Join Campus Organizations at UCM

The university campus has many clubs, groups, and associations that are designed for various interests. Consider signing up for a student organization or club, engaging in intramural sports, or participating in community volunteer service programs. These activities will allow you to meet new people who share your interests, thereby making your time in college more fulfilling.

Use the Academic Support Services at UCM

Make good use of the academic support services provided at UCM to succeed in your studies. If you need extra assistance with any subject, attend tutoring sessions offered by the Academic Success Center or book study skills workshops which can help improve your performance overall.

The library also has research facilities where librarians can assist with finding relevant materials for assignments and provide access to online databases, among other resources. More so, never shy away from seeking advice from lecturers or academic advisors whenever necessary because they have been trained to offer assistance accordingly.

Time Management at UCM

Time management is very important in school. Dealing with school and social life can be quite a challenge, especially if you have a part-time job or are involved in different clubs. You can plan your week by creating a schedule or using an organizer that will help you prioritize your tasks and commitments.

This way, everything else won’t seem too overwhelming because it’s broken down into smaller pieces that are easier to handle, so set aside time for study hours and classes, but also don’t forget to incorporate some fun activities into your planner! Another thing about time management is staying organized; being disciplined with yourself when managing how you spend each hour can save lots of precious minutes.

Building Relationships with Peers and Professors

The people around us have the power to either make our lives better or worse, which is why students must create healthy relationships with their peers & professors alike. College should not be just about going through the motions until you graduate but rather engaging actively in what interests you most. It’s pretty simple:

  • Initiate conversations during class discussions.
  • Form study groups whenever possible so as to collaborate on projects together.
  • Attend office hours regularly (especially when dealing with difficult subjects) because this will allow them to understand concepts better than they would have if the interaction had happened only inside classrooms.

These relationships should not be limited to classroom settings alone since they offer more than just tuition fee benefits. Mentorship programs and networking opportunities are also available for students.

Health and Wellness at UCM

It’s easy for students to forget about themselves amidst all these academic hula hoops, but this section serves as a reminder that your health matters, too! Always ensure that throughout the years you spend at UCM, mental health isn’t compromised either positively or negatively.

Exercising regularly (this could mean hitting the gym thrice weekly) and eating balanced meals plus snacks throughout the day, thus ensuring proper nutrition levels are met daily. This might sound like a lot, but trust me when I say if there were ever any truth in saying “health is wealth,” then now would be that moment!
